The Hobbit: “What ought we to do?”/”How beautifully blue the sky”

(Scene: The Dwarves and Bilbo have arrived in Laketown. The Master of Laketown and the other burghers try to decide what to do about it.)

Master: What ought we to do, fellow burghers, pray?
Common sense, you know, says send them away.
Burgher 1: How would Smaug react if tickled by this feather?
Burgher 2: Then do we have a pact to shun them altogether?
(They take a vote, the “ayes” don’t have it.)
Burgher 3: But what calamity, if by chance we should
Miss a chance to be rid of Smaug for good!
Burgher 4: Since the dwarves appeared, they’ve charmed our population;
And though we think it weird, that’s part of the equation.
Master and Burghers: Yes, yes; that’s part of the equation.
(they take a vote, and this time it’s unanimous. The Townspeople cheer and begin to feed the dwarves and set up supplies.)

Townspeople:
How beautifully blue the sky!
Our hopes are rising very high:
If they procure the dragon’s doom
We’ll have an economic boom.
To help their kingdom start to rise
We’ll gladly lend a few supplies;
According to the stories old,
Our river may yet run with gold….

Thorin: Were ever dwarves in
quite a state of desperation
And unexpectedly
find such resuscitation?
Was ever dwarvish enterprise
in such a bad mess
Redeemed by humans
to exceeding gladness?
Townspeople:
To help their kingdom start to rise
We’ll gladly lend a few supplies;
According to the stories old,
Our river may yet run with gold….
(exiting quietly)

Master: Ah, yes; ah, yes… (aside) This is exceeding madness.

Townspeople: (re-entering with more supplies)
How beautifully blue the sky!
Our hopes are rising very high:
If they procure the dragon’s doom
We’ll have an economic boom.
To help their kingdom start to rise
We’ll gladly lend a few supplies;
According to the stories old,
Our river may yet run with gold….

Master: (to Thorin)
Did ever city fund
so brave an expedition–
(aside)
With such a tiny chance
of coming to fruition?
Townspeople:
To help their kingdom start to rise
We’ll gladly lend a few supplies….
(exiting quietly)

Townspeople: (entering again with yet more supplies)
How beautifully blue the sky,
Our hopes are rising very high.
If they procure the dragon’s doom,
We’ll have an economic boom.
If they procure the dragon’s doom,
We’ll have an economic boom….

Thorin:
Were ever dwarves in
quite a state of desperation
And unexpectedly find
such resuscitation?

Ah, yes….

Ah, yes….

Master:
Did ever city fund
so brave an expedition–
With such a tiny chance
of coming to fruition?

Ah, yes…

Ah, yes…

Townspeople:
How beautifully blue the sky,
Our hopes are rising very high.
If they procure the dragon’s doom
We’ll have an economic boom.
To help their kingdom start to rise
We’ll gladly lend a few supplies.
According to the stories old,
The river may yet run with gold,
According to the stories old,
The river may yet run…

All: Ah yeeeeeessss!

You probably need to see how the music in this one works. You might try this link, though most versions tend to have more “daughters.”….
