Raging Against the (Washing) Machine

Rumor has it that during the detente period of the Cold War, someone suggested a trade agreement in which the US would send grain to the USSR in exchange for washing machine parts.  The agreement was stopped by Nixon, who feared an influx of Communist agitators.
